I have been involved in a wide range of teaching across applied mathematics, from laboratory demonstrations in non-Newtonian fluid dynamics, through to asymptotic methods for postgraduates, and introductory calculus for first year mathematics students.
Material for current courses is available through the Learn pages for those courses. Below are some collated links for interesting material that I have used in past courses.
All of the links that follow were good when I put them up - but obviously some material gets taken down over time and so they may end up broken. Likewise material on external sites is subject to change and so I take no responsibility for the linked sites, however let me know if you come across any problems.
MT4509 Fluid Dynamics video links
- Airflow around a Zonda - good demonstration of streamlines/streaklines.
- Airflow around a Mercedes - another good demonstration of streamlines/streaklines and unsteady regions.
- Shock wave formed in a compressible fluid (air) by an explosion - shock waves are features fast flows in compressible fluids.
- Hydraulic suspension - demonstrates the use of fluid pressure through hydraulics to apply forces in 'useful' ways.
- Lava flow - example of a buckling viscous jet.
- Hydraulic jump - example of an hydraulic jump formed as a river flows out into a lake.
- Supercritical transition - lab demonstration of a supercritical transistion in a channel flow.
- Cavitation around a propellor - demonstration of the cavitation that occurs when a propellor is spun very fast, the pressure at the blade tip drops below the vapour pressure.
- NASA wingtip vortex video - the vortex associated with the wingtip of a passing plane visualised with coloured smoke.
