Greater detail of the background needed to succeed in the financial mathematics MSc programmes is given in the following sections:
Applicants should have a good first degree (comparable to UK first class or upper second class honours degree), in Mathematics or a degree with significant mathematical component (e.g. a degree in some physical science).
We advise that, in most cases, applicants with degrees in Accounting, Business, Economics or Finance do not meet this requirement.
Applicants should have done the majority of the following courses as part of their first degree:
- Calculus
- Real Analysis
- Linear Algebra
- Probability
- Statistics
- Differential Equations
Applicants for the Computational Mathematical Finance MSc programme should have studied at least one semester-long undergraduate programming course (in any language e.g. C, C++, Java, Python) passed with a good grade. This would equip you with an understanding of flow control, methods / functions and some basics of data structures.
There are no specific computational skills requirements for applicants to the Financial Modelling and Optimization MSc programme.
You must demonstrate English language competency at a level that will enable you to succeed in your studies, regardless of your nationality or country of residence.
