The peculiar traits of human mathematics

Abstract   I will try to uncover some of the special features of mathematics as done by human beings (as opposed to, say, extraterrestrials or computers). Our visual sense is particularly influential. I will look closely at higher-dimensional algebra, a subject in which the role played by diagrams provokes interesting questions.
