Scottish Summer Masterclass Day
On Saturday 16th June nearly 100 pupils from across Scotland came to King's Buildings to take part in the Scottish Summer Maths Masterclass Day. Pupils were invited either because they had done masterclasses earlier in the year (at series running in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and Aberdeen) or because they had performed well in the UK Mathematics Challenge. The day started with pupils doing the FunMaths Roadshow, completing short puzzles to get their brains warmed up for the day. There were then two different masterclasses: one on proofs and puzzles by Colin Wright, and the other on integer partitions by Steven O'Hagan. Over lunch, the pupils got into teams to do a quiz, for which prizes were given at the end of the day.
One pupil said "[The masterclasses] opened up a new alleyway of maths I hadn't thought about before. Really thought provoking!", while another said "It was a great opportunity to experience a different kind of maths from school". A third pupil summed the day up with one word: "Wow!".
S2 masterclasses will start running again in Edinburgh in September. For more information, contact Julia Collins: Julia.Collins@ed.ac.uk.
The Scottish Summer Masterclass Day was supported by the LMS, EMS and UKMT.
