Ana Rita Pires cited in Quanta Magazine Fibonacci article
Ana Rita Pires' work on symplectic geometry as part of a 2019 Association for Women in Mathematics workshop has been cited in a Quanta Magazine article - "Mathematicians Discover the Fibonacci Numbers Hiding in Strange Spaces". At the workshop, Ana Rita created a working group with mathematicians Dusa McDuff, Tara Holm, and Morgan Weiler with the goal of embedding ellipsoids into a type of shape (called a Hirzebruch surface) with infinitely many incarnations to create infinitely many staircases. After more than a year of work, the group found success and published a paper that excavated infinite staircases for certain values of b. Read more from the article here.
