Edinburgh Maths Circle visits local primary school
On Thursday 25th November, Nikola Popovic, Annalisa Iuorio (visiting postgraduate research student from Vienna), Frits Veerman, Zhou Miao and Mairi Walker visited the Flora Stevenson Primary School to work with P5 pupils as a part of the school's STEM Week. The aim was to give pupils the chance to explore different topics within science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and the team from the School of Mathematics delivered sessions using resources from the Edinburgh Maths Circle to help pupils develop their problem-solving skills and see that maths is more than just numbers and shapes.
Feedback from the event was very positive, with all pupils engaging well with the activities, and many pupils commenting on how much they enjoyed the sessions. The event was also a great opportunity for some of our staff members who wouldn't normally take part in outreach activities to share their passion for maths in the local community. All helpers were excellent when working with the pupils, and thoroughly enjoyed the day. We hope that the event will be just one of many opportunities to take Maths Circle resources into local schools, as well as engage more staff members in outreach events.
