School of Mathematics

New partnership with the Martingale Foundation

Students facing financial barriers to pursue postgraduate degrees in maths are invited to apply for a new scholarship.

The University's School of Mathematics has partnered with the Martingale Foundation to improve access to a number of its Masters and PhD courses.

The Foundation's flagship programme offers fully funded scholarships including all tuition fees, research expenses and a tax-free stipend for living costs. Successful scholars will also join a prestigious development programme that provides training and experiences beyond their university offer to build a pioneering community of STEM leaders.

Postgraduate degrees are increasingly associated with academic and career advancement but student loans often fall short of tuition fees and living costs. This puts postgraduate study out of reach for many who find themselves unable to fund their studies.

Incoming Martingale scholars will have the opportunity to apply for a number of our MSc programmesmar, including MSc courses in Computational Applied Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Operational Research and Statistics with Data Science.

The Martingale Foundation was launched in 2022 with a founding cohort of five universities: University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Imperial College London, Kings College London, and University College London - with the inaugural cohort of scholars taking up their place this autumn, leading to a new generation of STEM postgraduates. Edinburgh joins the Universities of Bristol and Manchester in the latest partnership with the foundation.

Professor Bernd Schroers, Head of the School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh, said: "We are delighted to be partnering with the Martingale Foundation in nurturing and training the next generation of mathematical scientists at MSc and PhD level.

"Mathematics is growing rapidly at the moment, both as a vital field of knowledge and as a community. The School shares the Martingale Foundation's commitment to building a diverse and inclusive mathematical community, able to deploy mathematics to address some of the key challenges facing humanity. We look forward to welcoming Martingale Scholars to Edinburgh!"

Applications for the 2024 Martingale Scholarships are open until the 25th of October 2023 and incoming Martingale Scholars now have the opportunity to pursue postgraduate degrees in maths at the University.
