Jacques Vanneste has been awarded a NSF-NERC grant entitled "Scattering of ocean surface gravity waves by submesoscale turbulence" in collaboration with Professor William Young, Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Ocean surface gravity waves (SGWs) propagate through an inhomogeneneous medium of sea-surface currents resulting from submesoscale turbulence and from the surface expression of internal gravity waves. This project will contribute to improving the performance of operational wave models by including the statistical effects of unresolved currents. This will improve predictions of SGW activity and benefit developers and users of wave models.
