Julian Hall awarded prize for best paper of 2013 in Computational Optimization and Applications

Julian Hall, in collaboration with three researchers from Argonne National Labs, has been awarded the prize for the best paper of 2013 in Computational Optimization and Applications. The article describes the techniques they developed to implement the simplex method for stochastic linear programming problems from energy modelling, yielding scalable parallel performance. This paper also won the COIN-OR INFORMS Cup for 2013.

Having also been awarded this prize for a 2005 paper (with Ken McKinnon), Julian is the only person to win twice. With Jacek Gondzio having won the 2004 award, these successes reflect the standing of the Edinburgh group within the world of computational optimization.
