OR Challenge 2024 winners announced

This year, our OR Challenge was run in partnership with Police Scotland, who proposed a resource allocation problem for the city of Glasgow. Participants were tasked with determining the optimal allocation of police officers to precincts and incidents while adhering to some operational constraints. We had students participating from across the UK, including from institutions such as the University of Warwick, The London School of Economics, Imperial College London and our own University of Edinburgh.

Congratulations to the winning teams!

1st prize: Aaditya Bellamkonda and Krishna Bellamkonda (University of Warwick), who were awarded a paid summer internship with Police Scotland and £400

2nd prize: Robert O'Brien and Wojciech Such (London School of Economics) who were each awarded £300

3rd prize: Ken Deng (University of Edinburgh) who was awarded £50

Police Scotland said:

"Participating in the UG OR Challenge was a great experience for Police Scotland, as it meant we were able to share a real-life operational problem in an innovative format with a wide range of students. The submissions were of outstanding quality and made choosing a winner extremely difficult. We are now looking forward to working with the winning team over the summer on a related issue, and to continue to work with the School of Maths on future projects!"

Registration for next year's event will open in September.
