The Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, a research partnership between the Universities of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt, is celebrating the results of the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014). These rank it 5th out of 52 UK institutions, as judged by the Times Higher Education Supplement score. This is a major improvement on RAE2008 and raises the Maxwell Institute to a select group of world leading centres covering the full spectrum of the Mathematical Sciences.
Overall, the University of Edinburgh has been ranked 1st in Scotland for the quality and breadth of its research, and 4th in the UK. The results reveal that 83 per cent of the University’s research activity is in the highest categories - 4* and 3*- which are classified as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.
