All a matter of balancing dominoes

Introduction

This page contains a selection of problems associated with balance.

Stacking dominoes

Stacking dominoes

If you stack up dominoes one on top of the other, what is the greatest horizontal distance that can be covered before the stack tips over? Note that we assume there is no glue, although the models in the picture were glued together!

Self supporting spiral staircases

Stacking dominoes

Now, can you make a self supporting spiral staircase? This picture gives you a hint of how this might be done.

Self-righting stacks

Toppling stacks (right) and self-righting stacks (left).

These stacks don't look all that stable. However, it is possible to modify the construction to create a "self-righting" stack. That is to say, one that when toppled over will right itself. Here we assume the stack is glued together. How is this done?

Conclusion

It is possible to make some quite amazing balancing stacks. We can even create a self-righting stack. Next we consider some interesting polyhedra.
