Final announcement:Workshop on

Curves and Computation

24-29 March 1996

You are cordially invited to attend this workshop, on the computational number theoretic aspects of algebraic curves, particularly elliptic curves, but also curves of higher genus. Applications of curves, e.g. to coding, cryptography will also be considered.

The workshop is being held with the support of the Edinburgh International Centre for Mathematical Sciences(ICMS), and with funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

The meeting itself will be held in the James Clerk Maxwell Building, King's Buildings,Edinburgh University, Mayfield road, Edinburgh. Arrival day 24th March. Approximate timing of lectures: 9.00 25th to 16.00 29th March.

4. Travel information.

Edinburgh is well-served by both air and rail. The train journey time from London is about 4 1/2 hours (longer on Sundays). Edinburgh airport is a 20-minute bus ride from the city centre (Edinburgh(Waverly) railway station). The service runs every 45 minutes, and costs 3.20 pounds. A taxi to Pollock Halls from the centre costs about 3 pounds( 12-16 pounds from the airport). Bus routes 14,21 and 82 run from the city centre(Princes street) to Pollock Halls, on Dalkeith Road. The fare is 55 pence.

Glasgow airport is a 90-minute bus ride(50 miles, 80 km) from Edinburgh. "Citylink" buses run regularly from 8.00 to 23.00, from Glasgow airport to Edinburgh city centre(St. Andrew's Square). The fare is 6 pounds single, 9 pounds return. The Citylink phone number is 0990-505050.

By car: Pollock Halls in on the A7(Dalkeith Road). On approaching Edinburgh from any (horizontal!) direction, get on to the Edinburgh City By-pass(A720), and travel along it until reaching the Sherriffhall roundabout, where the A7 and A68 cross. Then take the A7 north, towards Edinburgh City. Follow the A7 straight across the Cameron Toll roundabout, and straight across the next major traffic lights( at East Mayfield and Priestfield Road). Pollock Halls will then shortly be visible on the right-hand side. However, to reach the car-park, take the next turn on the right(Holyrood Park Road), at a double set of traffic lights, and then turn right into Pollock.
