Biographical Statement

My research interests include (i) automatic assessment of mathematics using computer algebra, in particular the development of the STACK system, (ii) mathematical problem solving using Moore method and similar student-centred approaches and (iii) curriculum development. I'm the author of a number of books, including "How Round is Your Circle", which illustrates and investigates many links between mathematics and engineering using physical models.

Professional Activities

I am joint editor of Teaching Mathematics and its Applications, a journal of the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications.

Education Background

I attended Bishop Wordsworth's School, Salisbury and left in 1992 to read mathematics at Brasenose College, Oxford. I then completed an MSc in Nonlinear Mathematics and a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Bath.

Previous Employment

From 2013-2015 I was Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education in the Mathematics Education Centre at Loughborough University. From 2000-2013 I was employed by the School of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham. From 2000-2011 I was seconded half time to the UK Higher Education Academy "Maths Stats and OR Network" to promote learning and teaching of university mathematics.
