Contours magazine 2013-14 Edition

Welcome to our first ever issue of Contours, the magazine in which students interview researchers to find out what life is like for a mathematician.

What does a mathematician do when they aren't lecturing students? What kind of questions are they thinking about? What inspired them to study their subject and what do they do when they get stuck on a problem? What are the big questions facing mathematicians today? Along the way, we've found out about some arm-bending algebra, the beauty of the Mystic Hexagon, some unusual uses for statistics, and how even the best of mathematicians can feel like an idiot sometimes.

We hope that this magazine will help to bridge the gap between staff and students, and will spark new conversations in the Maths Hub, common room or library café. Take time out to complete our prize crossword and please write in to us to tell us what you think of the very first Contours magazine!
