Maths/Art project is blogged on AMS site

A maths/art project designed by the School of Mathematics Engagement Officer Julia Collins and artist Madeleine Shepherd has now made its way across the Atlantic ocean. In a blog for the American Mathematical Society, Evelyn Lamb (who also writes for Scientific American) writes with enthusiasm about Botanica Mathematica, which uses simple mathematical rules to generate knitting patterns resembling plant structures. The project will run for the whole of 2013 to accompany the themes of Maths for Planet Earth and Year of Natural Scotland, and Julia and Madeleine are encouraging as many people as possible to contribute pieces for an exhibition at the end of the year.

You can read Evelyn's article here:

(We particularly liked the description of Julia's job as 'awesome'!)

The Botanica Mathematica project was recently part of Edinburgh's first ever Mini Maker Faire at the Edinburgh International Science Festival. It will be out on the road again at the Orkney Science Festival in September, and at the Midlothian Science Festival in October. Don't miss it!
