Applications sought for senior academic appointments in technology enhanced science education

The University Of Edinburgh, College of Science & Engineering, is one of the largest science and engineering groupings in the UK. The College supports excellence in Teaching and Research and was ranked 17th globally in the recent QS rankings. Home to around 5500 undergraduates and 2500 postgraduates, the College is making a significant and long term investment in teaching by establishing a number of new Chairs of Science Education. Four appointments have already been made and we would like now to fill the remaining three vacancies in the Schools of Chemistry, Engineering, and Mathematics. Collectively, they will form the Centre for Science Education, building on recent developments and enhancements, notably in distance education, MOOCs and other technology-enabled teaching approaches. These appointments in the College of Science & Engineering represent one element of a broader University investment in technology enhanced strengths in our research and teaching. The University has already made other senior academic appointments in Learning Analytics and Informatics, Digital Learning, and Continuing Education. Reporting to the relevant Head of School, candidates for these positions will be expected to provide strategic leadership in developing approaches to learning, teaching and assessment that enhance the student learning experience. An established, outstanding, international research reputation; substantial experience of teaching and supervision at both undergraduate and post graduate levels and the ability to demonstrate creative, innovative and engaging approaches to teaching, are all pre-requisites for these posts. Candidates may come from a variety of backgrounds but must be passionate about helping students to learn and must approach learning and teaching in creative, innovative and engaging ways. Although we expect to appoint to Chairs, to support our long term commitment to Technology Enhanced Science Education, appointments may be considered at Reader level for those who are clearly on trajectory for a Chair appointment. Informal enquiries should be directed to the Head of College, Professor Lesley Yellowlees, CBE (email l.j.yellowlees@ed.ac.uk or telephone 0131 650 5754) or the Dean of Learning and Teaching, Professor Graeme Reid (email graeme.Reid@ed.ac.uk or telephone 0131 650 5352).
