Prize-giving ceremony for maths challenge winners

On 5th of June, the University of Edinburgh was proud to host a prize giving ceremony at Moray House for the Scottish Mathematical Challenges 2014-2015.  This ceremony was held to celebrate school pupils from the Lothians and Borders who had achieved Gold or Silver awards in the primary and secondary sections.  The pupils with Gold and Silver awards, their teachers, and parents attended the ceremony.  In the ceremony, Prof. Rachel Norman from the University of Stirling gave a stimulating talk on "Life of Pi", which was then followed by the prize giving ceremony with certificates and mugs (see photo) and refreshments. The School of Mathematics managed the secondary section of the region, while the School of Education managed the primary section.  More than thirty schools participated in the secondary section of this competition and the number of the participants was 592 in the first round (Autumn, 2014) and 277 in the second round (Spring, 2015). Among those participants, 47 Gold awards, 50 Silver awards, and 55 Bronze awards were given to the pupils with high scores through the two rounds of the competition. We would like to warmly thank and congratulate the pupils who participated in the SMC,  along with the teachers and family members who encouraged them, and members of the School of Mathematics for the great help in marking scripts.  Thank you!
