Tim Adamo has been awarded a Leverhulme Trust research project grant entitled Twistors and Quantum Field Theory in Strong Backgrounds. The framework of quantum field theory (QFT) underpins the most rigorously-tested scientific theories in history, forming the basis of deep isights into the structure of our universe at both tiny and enormous distance and time scales. Yet despite its myriad successes, there are many shortcomings in our understanding of QFT, particularly scenarios where strong background fields must be taken into account, such as inside lasers, near high-energy collisions, or close to black holes. This project will apply innovative mathematics to compute physical quantities in an array of strong backgrounds, making contact with many exciting topics across physics.
