Postdoctoral Research Associate in Very Large Scale Optimization

Applications are invited for a 3-year postdoctoral position in the area of very large scale optimization with a particular focus on computational methods used in building layout design.

The successful candidate will join the Edinburgh Research Group in Optimization and will work with Professor Jacek Gondzio on the project funded by the EPSRC Research Grant EP/N019652/1: Computational Design Optimization of Large-Scale Building Structures: Methods, Benchmarking & Applications. The project is a collaboration with Professor Gilbert, University of Sheffield and Dr Shepherd, University of Bath.

Applicants will have completed a PhD in Optimization, or a related field of computational mathematics, and will demonstrate outstanding research potential. An ideal candidate will have a documented expertise and research record in continuous optimization techniques, provable understanding of interior point methods and some knowledge of combinatorial optimization, and will demonstrate excellent programming skills. Prior experience in development of efficient optimization software and applying it to solve very large scale constrained optimization problems would be an advantage. Familiarity with structural engineering techniques applied in design of large-scale structures such as tall buildings and long span roofs would also be an advantage.

All applicants should apply online via our vacancy website. The application process is quick and easy to follow, and you will receive email confirmation of safe receipt of your application. Please upload a CV and a research statement under optional documents and arrange for at least two referees to send letters of recommendation directly to hr@maths.ed.ac.uk by the closing date of 5pm (GMT) 14th April 2016.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Jacek Gondzio (j.gondzio@ed.ac.uk).

Salary scale: £31,656 to £37,768.
