School of Mathematics

Bernd Schroers appointed as new Head of School

The School of Mathematics has appointed Professor Bernd Schroers as its Head of School from August 2022.

Responding to his appointment, Bernd says:

'It is a great honour to be given this opportunity to lead the School of Mathematics. This is arguably the era of mathematics, and the School already plays an internationally leading role in fundamental mathematical research, in impactful applications of mathematical sciences, in technology-enhanced education and in building a diverse and global mathematical community. I look forward to joining the School and to working with its staff and students to build on these strengths.'

Bernd Schroers is currently Professor of Mathematics at Heriot-Watt University where he served as Head of Department during 2014-2017. He has been involved in the development of mathematical sciences in Edinburgh in a number of ways since moving here in 1999, most recently has Co-director of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences and as Co-chair of the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS). Professor Schroers is a mathematical physicist with research interests in topological solitons and quantum gravity and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2021. He has a long-standing interest in increasing global participation in mathematical education and research, and has worked closely with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) as lecturer and advisor.
