The Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences

The Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences brings together research activities in the mathematical sciences at Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt Universities.   Launched in 2005, the Maxwell Institute has been supported by funds from the Scottish Funding Council (SFC); it builds on the complementarity of the three departments and on long history of collaboration between them, best exemplified by the establishment and continued operation of the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS). The Maxwell Institute is part of  a broader structure, the Edinburgh Research Partnership in Engineering and Mathematics (ERPem), which provides a framework for the cooperation between UoE and HW in engineering and mathematics.

The School of Mathematics has, in partnership with the School of Mathematics and Computing Sciences at Heriot-Watt, been awarded one of the new Centres for Doctoral Training. The University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University will host the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Mathematical Analysis and its Applications: Maxwell Institute Graduate School  in Analysis & Applications (MIGSAA), which is one of 22 new centres in the UK to provide postgraduate training in engineering and the sciences.
