MACHINE LEARNING TECHNIQUES FOR ENERGY SYSTEMS
Monday 21 October 2019 at 13:00-14:00, JCMB 5323

Abstract

Machine learning is seemingly everywhere these days, from deep-fake videos of Tom Cruise to video-game playing computers and Netflix recommendations. Some of us may want to apply these “sexy” new techniques in our own research but don’t know the best tools to use or where to start. This talk introduces some practical examples of applying machine learning techniques in the field of energy systems, focusing on image classification and time-series analysis. It will look at some of the common tools available to researchers and how we might make a start applying these tools in our own research. It will also discuss what machine learning is not; a magic black box which is a substitute for thinking.
