Systems problems in the integration of renewable energy into the grid

Abstract

The more widespread use of renewable energy, e.g. wind power, predicted for the future supply of electricity in the medium term, poses considerable mathematical and statistical problems in dealing with its volatility of supply. We discuss some of the major problems in general terms, and we also look in detail at a modest optimisation problem associated with on-site storage of electricity at a wind farm.
