ABSTRACT:

The Mars-Simon tensor is used to obtain conditions on a
vacuum initial data set for the Einstein vacuum equations so that the
development is isometric to a subset of the Kerr spacetime. These conditions
can be written in terms of quantities intrinsic to the initial data
hypersurface. The propagation of these conditions into the development
of the data is discussed and some applications are considered.
