Welcome!

Welcome to my website! It's still very much a work in progress I hope to spruce it up a bit more in the not-too-distant future. It's better than what I had before in any case..

Basic information

I am a PhD student at the University of Edinburgh. My main area of research is Probability and Stochastic Analysis, and my supervisor is Sandy Davie. (a.davie@sms.ed.ac.uk).

I obtained my Undergraduate degree at the same University in June 2006, obtaining a BSc(Hons) in Mathematics with first class honours. My undergraduate project, entitled "Probabilistic Number Theory" can be found here.

Research interests

I am currently studying the properties of the matrix exponent omega, that is the value omega such that the number of operations required when multiplying a nxn matrix is O(n^omega). The aim is to improve (i.e. reduce) the value omega =2.376 found by Coppersmith and Winograd in their paper (found in the links section below).

Preliminary work

A preliminary piece of work regarding the partitioning of sets of size 3k (where k is a postive integer) can be found here.

First Year report

The above work was integral to my first year report.

Tutoring

When the undergraduates are in class, I tutor Honours 2 courses.

The courses I have tutored for are Several Variable Calculus, Foundations of Calculus, Linear Algebra and Methods of Applied Mathematics.
I have also covered classes for Honours 1, Mathematics for Informatics 3 and Mathematics for Chemical Engineers 3 & 4.

Outside interests

I am involved with the Edinburgh Navigators, a small group Bible ministry which meets every Monday to discuss a pre-set passage.
I attend Saint Catherine's Argyle Church of Scotland, where I sometimes help out with operating the PowerPoint.
I enjoy watching most forms of sport and playing some forms (as well as playing with statistics derived from them) . I have a keen interest in Formula One, Rugby Union and Association Football, in which I support Northern Ireland and Spurs (I guess).
I occasionally write stories, but they aren't serious attempts at literature. I won't be troubling Dickens, Joyce or Heaney. Or putting them up on this website.
