Undergraduate FAQ

What are the differences between an MMath, a BSc degree and the MA degree?

MMath is a challenging five year programme for students who may want to apply advanced mathematics in their careers. The final year of study is at masters level. The BSc is our standard undergraduate four-year degree. Switching between BSc and MMath is possible until the fourth year.

The MA is the historic name for the undergraduate Scottish Arts degree. Our MA Mathematics is very similar to the BSc Mathematics degree except that there is an additional requirement: in your first two years you study also a coherent programme of courses in the College of Humanities and Social Science.

Will I study subjects other than maths?

If you apply for first year entry ("broad prehonours") then half your time in Year 1 and about a third in Year 2 is available for you to take outside courses from the huge range offered by the University. The choice is very wide: you could study Physics, Accountancy, Arabic, Philosophy, Music, Scottish History, French or Logic to name just a few. In that case, MMath takes five years and BSc and MA degrees take four years. We encourage also applications from well-qualified students to enter directly in to second year so that MMath can be completed in four years and BSC and MA degrees in three. In this "accelerated prehonours" programme you will not have space for very much study of outside subjects.

Can I take a gap year?

We have no objection to your taking a gap year before you start your degree. However we strongly advise that you keep up your study of mathematics during this year so that you do not get completely out of practice. If you wish to apply for deferred entry then please contact our admissions office to check if we are accepting deferred applications in this cycle.

What careers can a maths degree lead to?

Most careers are open to a maths graduate and our degrees are highly regarded by employers. Details of some careers entered by our students.

Are there opportunities to study abroad?

Yes. You can apply to spend your third year studying abroad. The University has exchange schemes with many universities.

The School of Maths has Erasmus exchanges in Germany with the Humboldt University in Berlin and with Bielefeld, with the University of Vienna, and in Spain with the Universities of Alicante and Salamanca.
