The city of Edinburgh has it all: pubs, shops, Arthur’s seat and bagpipes. It’s a big city with a small-town feel. The maths department offers support when needed and space when desired. Regular tutorials provide an invaluable learning experience and will be the cornerstone of your education. In addition to top class staff, Edinburgh’s facilities are state of the art: lecture theatres equipped with perfect acoustics, projectors and electronic black boards. Tutorial rooms are packed with more wide-screen monitors than Currys and computer labs have the latest hardware and software.
Throughout your time at Edinburgh you will be given freedom to choose which subjects you study. In first and second year you will choose at least one outside subject; from Physics to Economics to English. In 4th year there are no compulsory courses allowing you to spend all your time on subjects that interest you. There is also the option to undertake a group or individual research project under the supervision of a lecturer.
3rd year at Edinburgh offers a magnificent opportunity: in virtually all subjects you can study abroad for a year. Only a few Universities in the UK have the international prestige of Edinburgh and fewer still have such an extensive network of exchange partners. From Australia to Spain, Hong Kong to Los Angeles the possibilities are amazing. The programme is open to any student with sufficiently high grades (but it is not just the highest of fliers who can apply, you need a 60% average). My year abroad took me to Canada. Whilst abroad you get to study at a world leading university in another country, meeting locals and other exchange students from all over the globe – it is a truly brilliant experience. The alternative academic style will benefit your learning when you return to Edinburgh, allowing you to use the best of both university styles.
There is no other university I would rather have gone to for my maths degree.

The University of Edinburgh Maths department could not be any more helpful. As a student here you feel a real sense of community. Emphasis is placed on working together, both with fellow students and with lecturers. Both the academic and personal support systems in place are fantastic. I would not want to have studied anywhere else.
