Julian Hall wins award for best use of OR software

On October 7, Julian Hall (University of Edinburgh) and co-authors from Argonne National Labs were awarded the COIN-OR Cup for 2013 at the INFORMS conference. COIN-OR (COmputational INfrastructure in OR) is a project to develop new open-source software for the operational research community, and this prize was for the best use of the world's leading open-source software for OR in 2013. The winning paper used a dual revised simplex implementation for structured linear programming problems and solved instances of power systems decision-making with up to 108 variables/constraints on the Blue Gene supercomputer at Argonne.

The paper can be found at Computational Optimization and Applications, 55(3), 571-596, 2013.

The School of Mathematics would like to congratulate Julian on winning this award.
