School's first Massive Open Online Course a success

The School's first Massive Open Online Course, Statistics: Unlocking the World of Data, has drawn to a close. The free, six-week, online course introduced nearly 12,000 participants from 177 different countries to the wonders of statistics. The topics covered in the course ranged from basic ways of presenting and summarising data, to notoriously tricky concepts such as confidence intervals and hypothesis testing.

The course design was led by Mairi Walker, with Ruth King providing academic support, and Chris Sangwin providing support regarding technology-enhanced learning. Creating the course was an exciting opportunity for the School to develop is expertise in online learning, and combined videos, interactive GeoGebra applets, quiz questions and supporting text to engage participants and give them an intuitive understanding of statistics.

Early feedback from the course is looking very positive, with many participants praising the quality of the course, and the effort that the course team put into designing and creating the course. A number have even suggested follow-up courses in more advanced topics in statistics!

Don't worry if you have missed out this time round: We will be running the course again in the future. Watch this space to find out when!
