The University format and binding instructions for a thesis.
The University format rules apply also to a first-year report, but a declaration and binding are not required.
If you do not already know LaTeX, you can attend the University LaTeX course or learn from online notes.

All School computers have LaTeX installed.
The School has a uniform LaTeX style file edmaths.sty for reports and theses, which satisfies the University format rules. See edmaths.html for the documentation further details. The style file should be downloaded and placed in your working directory (= folder), i.e. where you keep your .tex file. If necessary, download setspace.sty also, and place it in your working directory (= folder).
First-year report example: report.tex, PDF output: report.pdf
Thesis example: thesis.tex, PDF output: thesis.pdf
The LaTex class file msthesis.cls was in use at the School 1996–2006. See http://www.maths.ed.ac.uk/computing/software/sun-wp/latex/#thesis for further details.
This can still be used if you already started writing a thesis using it (although it is easy enough to switch to the new LaTeX style).

If you want to install LaTeX on your own computer:
- Windows: download and install a free distribution of LaTeX from MiKTeX, along with the free TeXnicCenter LaTeX editor/previewer.
- Macintosh: MacTeX.
- Linux: most Linux installations have teTeX or tex-live pre-installed, but if yours does not, you can download it from the TeX Users Group.
