Monitoring and Milestones - PG Student Guide

The following is a guideline to the progress one is expected to make during the Ph.D. programme.

Items marked in bold are major milestones and are managed by the Graduate School. Items labelled as whole year may take place at any time during their respective year.

First Year

When What
3rd/4th week of September Welcome Events : Welcome tea, tutorial training session, Getting started with your Ph.D. transkills course, JCMB library talk
Start October Consultation with supervisor to agree SMSTC courses, set up weekly meeting time
Mid October SMSTC Opening Symposium (Dewar's Centre, Perth, 2nd & 3rd October 2012) including ICMS generic skills course.
SMSTC lectures start Monday, 8th October 2012
End October Decide on reading programme for next 3–6 months with 1st supervisor
Mid November Meet with PG Advisor (Noel Smyth) to discuss experiences so far
Mid December First semester meeting with 2nd supervisor
Mid February Second SMSTC Symposium (ICMS, February 2013 - date TBC)
Late Feb/Early March SMSTC/ICMS generic skills training
April Work plan April–August leading up to first year report

April Work plan April–August leading up to first year report

End May Second semester meeting with 2nd supervisor
End June Submit first draft of first year report to supervisor
August First Year report submitted and presented
Formal decision made on degree registration
(For students on conditional offer, verification that conditions have been fulfilled)

Second Year

When What
September Reaffirm research programme/goals with supervisor
October/March Attend at least one of the ICMS generic skills training course
December and May Meet with 2nd supervisor
Whole year Attend at least one transferable skills training course (Roberts)
Whole year Attend LMS/EPSRC short course/graduate school or local workshop
August Second Year report submitted.

Third Year

When What
September Reaffirm research programme/goals with 1st supervisor
December and May Meet with 2nd supervisor
October Finalise research programme with 1st supervisor
October/March Attend at least one of the ICMS generic skills training courses
October/March Attend at least one transkills course (Roberts)
March Attend thesis-writing course
Whole year Attend LMS/EPSRC short course/graduate school or local workshop
Whole year Attend a major conference
Whole year Give a talk outwith the school: At a conference e.g. BMC/BAMC, workshop
Whole year Give a talk within the school: PG Colloquium, PG research group, private arrangement
August Discuss career aspirations with 1st supervisor
August Submit thesis draft to 1st supervisor.
August Third Year report submitted.
