The following is a guideline to the progress one is expected to make during the Ph.D. programme.
Items marked in bold are major milestones and are managed by the Graduate School. Items labelled as whole year may take place at any time during their respective year.

| Mid November | Meet with PG Advisor (Noel Smyth) to discuss experiences so far |
| Mid December | First semester meeting with 2nd supervisor |
| Mid February | Second SMSTC Symposium (ICMS, February 2013 - date TBC) |
| Late Feb/Early March | SMSTC/ICMS generic skills training |
| April | Work plan April–August leading up to first year report (More reading, practice problem…) |

| End May | Second semester meeting with 2nd supervisor |
| End June | Submit first draft of first year report to supervisor |
| August | First Year report submitted and presented Formal decision made on degree registration (For students on conditional offer, verification that conditions have been fulfilled) |
