I came to the School of Mathematics by an unusual route, after working for a number of years as a secondary school teacher. I now work part time in the School of Education (0.8fte) and part time in the School of Maths (0.2fte). I can confirm that 0.8+0.2>1!
My research is in mathematical education, a field distinct from both mathematics and more general educational research. Recent work includes a study of the effects of soroban use on pupils' mental calculation strategies. (A soroban is a Japanese abacus). I am currently investigating beliefs about the teaching and learning of mathematics held by newly qualified teachers.
