This is an initiative of the School of Mathematics aimed at stimulating the involvement of its staff in multidisciplinary research. The initiative is funded by EPSRC through a sponsorship fund made available to the university.

maximaths supports a number of small-scale research projects that pair up School of Mathematics staff with partners from other schools or from industry (see the list of projects currently supported in the right-hand column).

2nd call for projects

A 2nd tranche of funding will support a series of new projects. These should act as precursors to long-term interactions but have well-defined objectives, achievable in a short time frame. Funding is available to cover a fraction of the research time of the staff involved, preferably postdocs and PhD students who can be seconded to projects for up to a few months. Academic staff's time may be funded, though only for direct research as opposed to supervision. The funding will also be available for travel/subsistence costs (e.g. to attend a relevant conference, invite a visitor for a few days) and for consumables essential to the project.

Applications are sought for projects requiring up to £4K which can be completed before 31 March 2013. The main criteria for selection are: long-term prospects of collaboration, potential for impact beyond academic areas, clear deliverables (especially grant applications), involvement of junior staff, and (of course) scientific excellence.

The deadline for applications is 11 May 2012; decisions about funding will be made within 3 weeks of the deadline. See below for the application procedure.

We encourage staff from all schools with potentially suitable projects to consider pairing up with School of Mathematics staff for a joint proposal. Help is available to identify the mathematicians likely to have relevant expertise.

maximaths 2.i

Further applications are sought for a 2nd round of maximaths 2, again for projects completed before 31 March 2013. Although new projects are preferred, plans for work following up from maximaths 1 projects will be considered. The deadline for applications is 30 November 2012; decisions about funding will be made within 1 week of the deadline. See below for the application procedure.
