We returned from the Mairie to the aperitif
which was at Agnès' parents'. Here we discovered the first
surprise of the day: the family of Jeannot and Renée had prepared
a huge `boule' of goodies on cocktail sticks. There is a story behind
this. Malissard is known locally for the large blue boule in the
middle of the roundabout at the entrance of the village. Julian had
thought that it would have been appropriate if the `pièce
montée' (the traditional French choux bun construction) could be
in the form of a boule but it was not to be so we got our boule at the
aperitif.
Music was provided by a band made up of members
of the family and members of the Harmonie de Malissard (with which
there is a strong family connection). Lucie loved the band and ended
up in the conductor's arms.
The grandchildren of Jeannot and Renée and
sang for everyone---except us! We'd nipped off to visit Agnès'
godfather Maurice who was in hospital. Because we missed them singing,
they came specially to the meal and sang again.
