Low-carbon transition: new challenges for power system modelling
Friday 8 May 2009 at 13.00, Sanderson Building Classroom 2

Abstract

Starting from the low-carbon objectives outlined at national and international levels - the presentation will discuss the implications for the UK and EU power system. A rapid transition to low carbon power systems requires significant changes to investment and operational paradigms. Power system modelling will play a central role in ensuring a smooth transition, and in evaluating the impacts of different system and regulatory design options. This will be illustrated using model results for the spacial distribution of investment in response to transmission constraints in the UK, and for the optimal dispatch of the power system, in response to uncertainties in wind forecasts.
