* Research

I am Professor of Mathematics Education as part of the Centre for Technology Enhanced Science Education. My research interests include (i) automatic assessment of mathematics using computer algebra, and (ii) problem solving using Moore method and similar student-centred approaches. A practical outcome of this is the STACK computer aided assessment system.

For more information, see the publicity flyer, our recent case study booklet, the demonstration site http://www.stack.ed.ac.uk/ and my book on this subject:

* International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 2019

I am very pleased to continue to work with Haese Mathematics to co-author textbooks. A series of six textbooks to align with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 2019 were published in the summer of 2019.

* Some mathematical highlights

Euler's sum

One of my favourite results in mathematics is the following: \[ 1 + \frac{1}{4} + \frac{1}{9} + \cdots = \frac{\pi^2}{6}. \] Leonard Euler's wild and brave explanation is given here.
The game of Hex

Hex is a connection strategy game for two players. It is simple to learn, great fun to play and has some deep mathematics behind it.

Some hex resources.
